NIF validator

Check a Portuguese NIF (número de identificação fiscal) before you use it on an invoice or a supplier record. The validator confirms the number has nine digits, a valid prefix and the correct check digit.

Everything runs in your browser. Files and numbers are never uploaded to our servers.

Spaces and the PT prefix are ignored.

How it works

The last digit of every NIF is a check digit computed from the first eight with the modulo 11 algorithm. If one digit is mistyped, the check digit almost always stops matching, which is how typos are caught.

A valid result means the number is well formed. It does not prove that the NIF belongs to an active company; for that, check the VIES service (for EU VAT numbers) or ask the supplier.

Frequently asked questions

No. It means the number is well formed. A made-up number can still pass the check digit. To confirm a company, look it up in official registers or, for EU VAT numbers, in the VIES service.

They indicate the type of taxpayer: 1 to 3 for individuals, 5 for companies, 6 for public bodies and 9 for some temporary or irregular entities, among others.

This tool checks one number at a time. Faturiza checks the NIF of every invoice it processes automatically and flags the ones that fail.
